Review: Sinister

Last 2010 we got what is probably one of the most scariest horror films in recent years which is ‘Insidious’ and now, this 2012 they cooked up something new for us. The question is will it be good or not? Find out below.

Synopsis:
Sinister is a frightening new thriller from the producer of the Paranormal Activity films and the writer-director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Ethan Hawke plays a true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernatural horror. -- (C) Summit

Story:
Insidious was a film that scared the hell out of me but even though it was scary it was missing something, and that is depth in story. If Insidious failed to bring this aspect on the table, Sinister makes up for it. But, there was also something missing from Sinister and that is the scare factor of Insidious, this movie only had jump scares but only some of them were effective, it wasn’t able to show a scary environment like what Insidious did. Nevertheless the story doesn’t come up short.

Acting:
Two words Ethan Hawke. This guy is just a great actor and he was able to show how scared his character really is towards the end. At first he was just some writer who wants to make a good book and raise his family right but in the end he became a man who wants to save his family from a horrific ending.

Violence:
It was a very graphic film and the ‘feel’ of the murders was realistic you can almost feel the pain that they are suffering from.

Music:
The score helped set the tone for the movie but at most times the music was used for jump scares, I admit some of them got me for a moment but it was a cheap attempt to scare the viewer. However the music was able to show how creepy the environment of the character is.

Cinematopgraphy:
Nothing special, so I have no say in this matter.

Direction:
Scott Derrickson previous directiol efforts were ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ and ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’. Now, I haven’t watched ‘Exorsim’ yet but I did watched ‘Earth’ and in all honesty it sucked major ass. ‘Sinister’ was a step up in his game because he was able to cook up a nice story and great acting from the cast.

Overall:
‘Sinister’ is a good horror film, my only gripe was that the some scares were cheap and not very effective. Ethan Hawke’s acting was also good, he was able to show how scared a man can be. I give this a 3/5.
