Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I wasn’t really familiar of the novel and as I watched the trailer it didn’t spark any interest in me but based on a lot of people’s opinions it was good, so were they right? Find out below.

Synopsis:
Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a modern classic that captures the dizzying highs and crushing lows of growing up. Starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a moving tale of love, loss, fear and hope-and the unforgettable friends that help us through life. -- (C) Summit

Story:
The movie was adapted from a novel of the same name written by Stephen Chbosky. The movie revolves around a freshman who is a loner and he happens to meet this character who happened to help him meet and be friends with some seniors. This is a coming of age drama and it was told beautifully, every scene and character was pivotal to the movie and also to the lead character. The movie was able to tell the exact emotion that a loner in high school is feeling; from start to finish you won’t be able to stray way from the movie.

Acting:
Logan Lerman just showed his best performance yet, he played the awkward freshmen with brilliance you will root for him from the start and you would want him to get on with Hermione. Now, Emma Watson was able to prove that there is more acting experience outside of Hogwarts, she was good here and just lovely. Next, is Ezra Miller he was just f*cking amazing playing a homosexual who helps Lerman’s character throughout the movie. He just outshines the performance of the others but his best moment was in the ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ moment. I hope he gets a nod at the Academy Awards. Lastly, as for the rest of the cast, they were good enough as they showcased a natural performance.

Music:
This film was set in the late ‘90s so that means the music can be a little from the oldies, but I don’t have to argue with this as I loved every song that this movie played. The music was pitch perfect with every scene and the music also resonated flawlessly to the characters.

Cinematography:
It was average, nothing special but I loved the cinematography when the lead character *SPOILER* got high on LSD as it somehow showed the effects of LSD on the mind and vision of a person *SPOILER*.

Direction:
The novel was written by Stephen Chbosky and he also directed and wrote the adaptation of the movie, and I give him huge respect for that, he is an overachiever. This is probably one of the best directorial debuts ever. The pacing of this film was perfect, it was never boring and it never felt too fast. I hope that he will direct more films in the future.

Overall:
‘Perks’ is a movie where you will be able to shower in a lot of emotions and that is because of the wonderful performances from the cast and it was also well-written and well directed by Stephen Chbosky. I give this film 4.5/5.
