Review: Looper

Time-travel is one of the hardest theme to pull-off in a movie. Did Looper managed to be good or the opposite?

Synopsis:

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented - but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" - a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) - is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good... until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. -- (C) Sony

Story:
Looper may not have an original theme (time-travel) but what it does have is it's original and unique story. Looper is one of those films that you must watch without having a bathroom break or even blink your eye as 'every second matters'. The story is brilliantly developed with very little flaws. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Joe, an assassin who eliminates people from the future. Bruce Willis is also Joe, BUT from the future! The conflict comes when the latter met the former, and I will spoil you no more.

Acting:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a convincing young Bruce Willis (in terms of looks and attitude) and pulls off the douchebag attitude that doesn't seem to quite fit him. Bruce Willis is still a bad-ass and delivers one of most memorable performance of his career (need I say more?). Paul Dano was also good despite his short role. Emily Blunt turns in a surprising performance and showed a redneck accent despite being English. Jeff Daniels wasn't bad as a villain. Noah Segan also played a convincing villain who just wants to be noticed and praised.

Action/Violence:
This film showcased action scenes which will be remembered. The violence was also a good aspect in adding more flair in the action scenes as it wasn't toned down.

Music:
Their is not much to say about the music as it was only a few but they were quite fitting to the scenes when the music was present.

Cinematography:
The cinematography in this film helps this film to be awesome. Every shot, camera angle was just pitch-perfect and engaging.

Direction:
This is the first Rian Johnson film that I've watched and I have to say I'm very impressed. He is a the director to watch out for and I can't wait to watch his previous outings (Brick, The Brothers Bloom). I also loved the pacing in this film, the first act was fast, the second act slowed it to down (to develop it much further) and the third picks up and got fast.

Overall:
Looper is an imaginative and thought-provoking sci-fi thriller and surely one of the best of its genre. Engaging from start up to its climax. The development was great, the action scenes were good and the performances of the leads was unforgettable. This film is definitely one of my best movies of this year and one of my top 20 films. I will give it a 4.5/5
