Review: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

What would you do if you know when the world will end? Spend it with someone or spend it alone?

Synopsis:
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World stars Golden Globe Award winner Steve Carell and Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley and is the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria. Set in a too-near future, the movie explores what people will do when humanity's last days are at hand. As the respective journeys of Dodge (Mr. Carell) and Penny (Ms. Knightley) converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks - if not the world's - brighten. -- (C) Focus

Story:
It deals with one of the most overused ideas in Hollywood, apocalypse. But this time, their is a date! While not having an original concept, it still managed to be good and have its own unique take. The film revolves around two neighbors who happens to get to know each other at the end of the world and managed to fall in love with each other despite their priorities. It seems to be the typical romantic-apocalypse movie but I say no, unlike others where the romance was forced, this one showed development in both the couple and the story aspect.

Acting:
Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley gave one their best or most memorable performance ever. Carrell as the confused husband who just got left behind and Keira Knightley as the happy-go-lucky guilty person. Their characters were well developed and that will not happen without the good performance of the leads.

Music:
This is another aspect in the film that I loved most. The songs were a perfect fit for each scene, it definitely adds a good tone for the environment of a scene.

Cinematography:
The cinematography was surprisingly good as I was not expecting much from this. The camera angles were good and the blockings of the actors were good too.

Direction:
As a debut for Lorene Scafaria, I can say that it's a good one. She is one of the few directors that needs to be watched especially in this genre.

Overall:
A surprisingly good film with well developed characters and story despite it's flaws. It's heartwarming and at the same time depressing. I give it a 3.5/5
