Review: Bullet to the Head

Sly's last film was The Expendables 2 which was released last year but this movie is widely considered as the comeback action movie for Sly. Can his action magic still work today? Read on below.

Synopsis:
Based on a graphic novel, Bullet to the Head tells the story of a New Orleans hitman (Stallone) and a DC cop (Kang) who form an alliance to bring down the killers of their respective partners. -- (C) Warner Bros

Story:
The story was pretty generic and nothing new was brought in, it was basically almost every action movie before. That said, I will admit that the story is well structured and easy to follow unlike other action films these days that tries to overcomplicate it's story. For a comeback film for Sly, I liked the story of this film, it really feels like a Stallone film and to some this movie may give them a trip in nostalgia lane.

Acting:
Let's face it, when Stallone has a gun, he is definitely going to f*ck sh*t up. He did a good job in this movie but it felt like his performance was just something borrowed from another movie (to specify, it's Expendables). Next is Sung Kang, he did a decent job in this one, nothing special. At times though he is annoying because he was a detective who just relies on his phone and I was like "WTF? Is this guy even a detective?". Now, onto the other characters, there was very little development to them and the actors who portrayed them gave an average job. Jason Momoa is a natural bad-ass though.

Action/Violence:
This is one aspect I that I liked about the film, the gun fights, the fist fights and the best one is the axe fight. All of these were shown good and were choreographed well. But overtime it tends to get boring because there was almost no buildup to it and they just want to get to it right away.

Another reason why I liked the action in this one is because it's full of blood, it was reminiscent to an 80s action flick.

Cinematography:
One word, generic.

Direction:
I really didn't like the direction of Walter Hill in this one. The way he directed his actor was pretty dull, there was really almost no good acting in this movie, aside from Momoa and Sly. But what I really hated is the way he had shown each scene, it just felt it had no consistency, and no motion when going in to the next scene. It was jumping from one scene to another.

Overall:
This came from the guy who directed 'The Warriors' (one of my all time favorites) and this was disappointing. It was boring and cliched and if you take out Sly and Momoa it will just make it worse even for what it already was. So top it all off, this is NOT a triumphant return for ol' Sly, I give this a 1.5/5.
