Review: Evil Dead (2013)

The original 'Evil Dead' trilogy is probably one of my favorite horror trilogies ever and it is also one of the best horror trilogies ever. Will this reboot have the same terror that the original films had? Read on below.

Synopsis:
In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Story:
The story is almost the same as the original, a group winds up in a cabin, they found the book of the dead and all hell breaks loose. What's interesting here is the fresh take on the story, instead of spending a relaxation time in the cabin (as seen in the original) the group goes to the cabin to help a friend overcome her drug addiction. I liked this take on the story because it's a way to be faithful to the original while bringing an original spin to the story.

Acting:
In a horror film, you can expect three types of acting, first is over-the-top, next is good, last is just laughably bad. This film falls more on the second category, the cast did a pretty decent job at being scared and showcasing how someone's reaction can be seen through being dismembered. What I hate here though is the lack of development in the characters, there was one character here who I feel like she is just here for the sake of being here. I mean she was not needed in this movie. That being said, the performance who really stood out here is Jane Levy. She was a pretty convincing drug addict who is trying to quit and she gave a performance of a deadite that is memorable, you will feel the terror the she has brought onto the film.

Violence:
Do I need to answer this? It's and Evil Dead film of course it's going to be violent and brutal! I will have to say this though, I loved how they executed this aspect because they used practical effects and not some CGI crap, I was really impressed by it, so kudos.

Cinematography:
One word, beautiful. it captured the mood of the movie, it was able to show how scary an isolated area can be. You can see that the spirit of the original film is present here through the cinematography. I also liked that they didn't leave out the fast-tracking shots that the original had. In my opinion this is an aspect of this franchise that made this scary.

Direction:
This is the debut film (full length) of Fede Alvarez and I must say I'm quite impressed. He was able to capture the spirit of the original while bringing an unique take on it. The way he handled the cast was pretty good, 'cause he squeezed out a decent performance from them. I was not a fan of his pacing though, it felt a little dragging at times.

Overall:
This remake is one of the best horror remakes in a long time. It was faithful to the original but having it's own spin, it was terrifying though at times a little slow. This is a solid debut for Alvarez and unforgettable performance from Levy. I give this film a 3.5/5
