Review: Jack The Giant Slayer

Today, Hollywood got the hots for updating our beloved childhood stories but only a few of them are successful, so is this latest attempt from Bryan Singer good or fail? Find out below.

Synopsis:
"Jack the Giant Slayer" tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult) into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend-and gets the chance to become a legend himself.-- (C) Warner Bros

Story:
Like what I said from above, this is a somewhat updated version of the tale but what I like from this is it didn't go down the route of being a "dark" adaptation like what they did with "Hansel and Gretel" and "Alice in Wonderland", that said though, the story here made little sense, like the motive of the villain played by Stanley Tucci. Story-wise this movie was underwhelming as you can already predict what is about to happen in almost every scene.

Acting:
Most of the actors here gave a good to average performance which was a good sign but what I hated here is there was very little development to the characters especially those in the supporting roles. Eddie Marsan was a waste here, he didn't even have a moment to redeem his character, another waste here was Ian McShane who quite possibly showcased one of hi worst performance yet, he wasn't able to show any emotions to show his love for his daughter, it was juts ridiculous. Lastly, Ewan Mcgregor and Stanley Tucci, even though they gave a good performance, their character was just paper thin with only 1 layer of dimension to the character they are playing. Now, that said, let's move on to the leads, while both of them was good for their respective roles, the chemistry between them feels forced and you can feel almost no affection between them.

Action/Violence:
For a fantasy film I have to say this is pretty action packed but somehow filled with campy tense which in my opinion works for this movie because it was able to show that this movie is kind of light-hearted. That said, despite showing little amounts of blood the movie is pretty violent (well maybe for kids from 3-8 years old) because you can see giants popping some limbs and some humans getting eaten alive (although some were shown offscreen).

Music:
Whenever I hear the music I feel that it is a little off to the scenes, that's all I have to say.

Cinematography/VFX:
Their are some (and I emphasize that word) shots in this movie that was good like when the beanstalk started growing, when the soldiers started climbing it and the descent of the giants. But that was the only shots that were memorable to me, most of them was pretty generic and average. The VFX in this movie was pretty good when it comes to the humans and showing how big the giants' place is but my main gripe here is the visual effects that was used on the giants. They looked pretty obvious to be CGI even though it was very detailed.

Direction:
This movie came from Bryan Singer the director of the first two X-Men films and 'Usual Suspects' and both of those movies were captivating (or at least to me) and seeing this movie directed by that guy, I was pretty disappointed, the movie was boring, with a slow first act upto the last act and also he wasn't able to let his actors do what they are supposed to do. It seems like he just got bored and did this film.

Overall:
Despite having a strong director and a wonderful cast, this film did not deliver the goods. It wasn't able to show the acting skills of the actors very much and the director's heart just wasn't in this flick. Thanks for the action scenes it made this movie a little entertaining. It's safe to say that I was disappointed with this movie. I give this movie a 2/5
