Review: Immortals

Tarsem Singh is probably one of my favorite working directors mainly because of the striking visuals that he always deliver. Before my review here is the synopsis for 'Immortals'.

Synopsis:
Visionary director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) and producers Gianni Nunnari (300), Mark Canton (300) and Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter) unleash an epic tale of treachery, vengeance and destiny in Immortals, a stylish and spectacular 3-D adventure. As a power-mad king razes ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful.

The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous Heraklion army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission.

As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion’s raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man’s future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity.

Review:
Story:
The story is not one to shout about because it feels like a "been there, seen that". In all honesty. I think that 'Immortals' is one of Singh's poor attempt at story. Why? It's because you might end up yawning or getting bored at the talking scenes. In terms of dialogue, it's not bad but also not good, some are cringe-worthy but some are spine-tingling. For the gods, I love how Singh made them look younger mainly because we are used to see them at an old age and at this take, seeing them young and at their prime is a fresh breath of air. My problem for the gods is that few of them had a good exposure and mostly underused.

Acting:
Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke delivers a good performance. Cavill is the ideal hero, giving motivational speeches and everything. Rourke is menacing and scary, he is the perfect villain. Whenever Rourke and Cavill appears on screen, you can almost feel their hatred for each other. Luke Evans was also a good Zeus as he showed that he is indeed in control of everything. John Hurt was also not bad. Let's move on to the others, the acting from the others are just average to just bad. Stephen Dorff gives an OK performance but Freida Pinto was just 'meh'.

Action/Violence:
This is what 'Immortals' is made of, action! I honestly thought that no film will be as graphic and violent as '300' but this not only was on par with the violence but might exceeded it (well at some parts). This film is definitely not to be shown to kids hehe. The battle between the gods and the titans was just insane and very violent.

Cinematography:
Well it's a Singh film so expect it to be good.

Visual FX:
Wow, I loved the CGI in this film it certainly adds more angst to the action scenes, adds more 'wow' factor to the sets.

Overall:
This film is without a doubt a 'style over substance' but it never failed to entertain although boring at some parts. This is just action-packed, Cavill and Rourke's performance was good and the chemistry between them is just electrifying. I give this film 7/10
